Yesterday we attended the Celebration of Life of Spike Maynard and we thought we would share with our fellow Druids far and wide as we know he touched the lives of many of you. He was a great friend, a good hearted man, and a loving husband. I really felt that this was a celebration of a life well lived and his impact on our community, both as a Druid and as an Antediluvian, were very evident when meeting old friends and recounting the many happy times and adventures with Spike. Spike was a true rugby gentleman, who was a friend to all. His generous caring nature touched many people, and he will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife Cathy, and a son and daughter, who we send our deepest condolences.
Spike was a regular weekly player at the Fun Runs, and at the club games and tours over the years. He was just at the August 28th Fun Run, and fielding, passing, and running the rugby ball with his own unique style.
He was a charter member of the Antediluvians RFC team in 2005 that won the World Masters Bronze medal. Spike joined the Druids RFC in the 1980's, touring to his home country Australia and visiting New Zealand on the 1989 club tour. He played some representative rugby in Australia and Canada, toured with select Edmonton rugby teams around North America.
He started the successful Harvest Vintage company importing beer, wine, and spirits. He was a very knowledgable connoisseur. Spike often brought a cooler of some of his unique beverages for after the Fun Runs, and was very generous in many ways to the Antediluvians RFC and the rugby community.
Shine on Spike.
